4 Complete the remainder of the glass by focusing on the upper part, again filling in the shadows using shades of grey and leaving the highlights free of any colour. There tend to be stronger shadows on the upper part of the glass. Make sure your highlights are nicely contrasted by placing the darkest colours directly next to them and creating sharp edges with a sharp pencil.

5 With the main aspects of the glass now in place, it’s time to define the ice. Fill in the shadows first: these mainly occur where cubes are sitting next to one another and in tiny little cracks in the surface of the ice. For the shadows, use gentle layers of Warm Grey 3 to gradually build up the tone, lifting the pressure from the pencil as you work towards the centre of the cubes. The centre tends to be the lightest, most dense part of the ice. You can also add in a little Skyblue to create more of a white effect. Gently add the tiny cracks using the same pencil, but make sure the point is sharp so you can get precise lines. The top of the water can be shaded with Warm Grey 3, just make sure to leave a tiny white line right where the surface of the water touches the glass: this will give a three-dimensional effect.
